How did the movie fare?

Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie a whopping 78 % rating on its tomatometer. The movie had rave reviews across the world, although its historical accuracy was a subject of heavy dispute. However, that did nothing to dampen the accolades that were bestowed on this movie by critics from afar, including those in The New York TimesMedia Circus, The History Place, and Reel Reviews.

Did I like it?

A big, loud, ‘Yes!’. This heart-warming movie is sure to melt hearts and Spielberg has brought to the fore his mettle in narration. The movie deals with a slave mutiny aboard La Amistad, a slave ship carrying West Africans to slavery and apparently inevitable doom. How the situation takes a twist when, although the slaves see a glimmer of hope in momentary freedom, are taken into capture once again by the American Navy. Cursed with despair and having only a very young property attorney-at-law for company, the slaves await their judgment. The actors have all done memorably well and Hounsou stands out with his “Give us, us free!” war cry. Soothing and moving music, powerful screenplay, and witty dialogues, have all gone on to make this movie a certain high-scorer. This being one of my all-time favorite movies, I would watch this over a hundred times, and yet feel no sense of repetitive gloom.
