Got this message from a colleague:
As I was passing an elephant, I suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.
No chains, no cages.
It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
I saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away….
“Well,” he said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them.
As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
I was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
A great read, no doubt!!!!
Like these elephants, how many of us go through life hanging on to a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before? How many of us are being held back by old, outdated beliefs that no longer serve us? How many of us have avoided trying something new because of a limiting belief? Worse, how many of us are being held back by someone else’s limiting beliefs?
Should we think about it?
Think, I did… This in fact made me think of what all could be achieved (?!) if at all we choose to let go of silly inhibitions…. But sadly, that’s the most difficult thing in the world… trying to be break free of limiting beliefs… because the moment you try, you stumble upon so many reasons to feel depressed… so many reasons that make one wonder: Am I the one who is insane or are they insane? Am I the one who’s out of place in this world of crabs? Or is this all just a passing phase? Am I the one who should change or are they? It’s really hard to think coherently…
The truth is, in this world, majority is always right… so should I adapt to the conditions or should I stand my ground, come what may? I think the best way out of this is to stand up for what we believe in… how much ever we are put down by others’ limiting beliefs…
There are times when the world gives us a lot of reasons to make us think we are foolishly sincere… to make us think we are completely wrong… to make us think we are crazy to take work and life so seriously… to make us think we are mad to be so honest… to make us think we are idiotic to be nice to people… to make us think we are too stupid to live life based on correct values and morals… our real challenge is not just living our lives the correct way but to live correctly all the time… the real challenge is not to set those values and morals but to not give them up thinking that they are of no use…. The real challenge is not to be just honest but to be honest despite being struck by felony and dishonesty from all corners… the real challenge is not to be just nice but to be nice despite being stabbed in the back…
Here’s to a better living!!!
